Modern Standby vs S3 by docs.microsoft.com
In Windows 10, there are two power models for PCs: S3 and Modern Standby.
Modern Standby is capable of leveraging all the capabilities of a modern chipset and
can be integrated across the breadth of tablets and PCs today.
The first iteration of Modern Standby was Connected Standby,
which first shipped in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
Modern Standby expands upon the Windows 8.x Connected Standby concept,
allowing for flexibility in component selection and
the ability for the OS to manage network connectivity in standby.
On any Modern Standby system, the system remains in S0 while in standby, allowing the following scenarios to work:
Background activity
Faster resume from a low power state
On systems that can stay connected while in standby,
wakes based on specific network patterns may also be set by the operating system
to enable apps to receive the latest content
such as incoming email, VoIP calls, or news articles.
Modern Standby comprises Screen Off and Sleep states, where
the Screen Off state encompasses active behaviors to quiesce the system to sleep, and
the Sleep state is equivalent to S3 sleep
with the added benefit that explicitly-allowed, value-adding software activity can run.
When in the lowest power state, systems may look very similar to systems in the S3 state—
processors are powered off and memory is in self-refresh.
The difference is in the path of how it enters and exits low power state.
For S3 systems, the system is either active or in S3.
For Modern Standby, the transition from the active to the low power state is a series of steps to lower power consumption.
Components are powered down when they are not in use.
So, the transition into and out of a lower power state is much quicker
Advantages of using Modern Standby over S3
Instant On
Background activity while the system is “off”
Simplified wake story
With Modern Standby a system stays in the S0 state and waking simply requires a hardware interrupt.
Thus, it may eliminate any need for firmware interaction.
Windows 10 is optimized to deliver longer battery life
by postponing non-critical work and
removing unnecessary wakeups during Modern Standby,
particularly when the system is operating on battery power.

FAQ Modern Standby - Dell Community:
Chris M (Community Manager):
All newer Dell laptops now use the Microsoft Modern Standby.
With regards to transporting your laptop, safety should be your primary concern.
You should always turn the laptop OFF
In all extended travel and especially airplane travel
Under no circumstances should you
leave a laptop powered on and in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode
when placed in a bag, backpack, or in an overhead bin.
The laptop will overheat as a result of that action.

fxtentacle:
It's a clusterfuck of bad design decisions at Microsoft,
the most offensive one being that they prioritize the execution of their scheduled spyware upload (telemetry)
over honoring the agreement with the user that a sleeping PC will remain asleep unless the user takes action.
Review: iOS 15 Does a Lot With a Little by sixcolors.com
You can’t create a FaceTime call without an Apple device,
so it’s not as though Windows or Android users are going to be using it to chat amongst themselves.
In order to open a tab from another device’s default tab group,
you have to revert to iCloud Tabs, accessible via Safari’s Start Page—or start typing a URL and it’ll probably pop up in your history.
I kind of like this implementation, especially since it removes some duplication:
if you have a tab group open on your Mac, and go to iCloud Tabs on your iPhone, the tab group won’t show up there.
Pictures that are sent to you in Messages will show up in the For You section of the Photos app with tags denoting who sent them,
but Apple will also insert certain pictures that are shared with you directly into your Photo library—
specifically, pictures messaged to you if you were also in proximity when they were taken.
There are a couple of small Spotlight features that might fly beneath the radar at first.
For one, you can now swipe down from the Lock Screen or Notification Center to access search
—previously, you had to be on the home screen.
Likewise the ability to delete an app from Spotlight’s results
or, for that matter, installing an app from the App Store directly from Spotlight results.
Spotlight will turn up results of text in pictures in your Photos app,
using the same sort of technology that powers Live Text.
But, bizarrely, this feature does not exist in the search function of the Photos app itself.
it’s easy to delete all your completed reminders
Just tap the three dots icon at the top of a reminder list,
then tap Show Completed—
a clear button will appear right below the name of the list.
watchOS 8: The MacStories Review by Alex Guyot
In watchOS 8, the selection view now shows a special “New Watch Faces” section at the very top.
Below this section, types of watch faces with multiple options can now be grouped together.
The above feels like a nice change, except that it also seems entirely unfinished.
The only actually grouped set of watch faces are the Pride series.
Others that would logically be grouped together — like Activity Analog/Digital and Numerals Mono/Duo — are still separate entries.
In watchOS 8, developers finally have access to the appearance of the Apple Watch when its always-on display is dimmed.
In previous versions, the display would cloud over with a dull gray color, and only the system time would be shown.
Now, third-party apps will be displayed with their interfaces dimmed out.
Developers will be able to control
what shows up on the dimmed version, and
what data should be updated over time or just removed altogether.
Matt Levine on Evergrade
Another lesson here is that the way to reduce systemic risk and potential bailouts is
for everyone to know how much risk they are taking,
for risks to come with clear warnings and accurate labels, and
for the risks to be taken by people who can handle them.
Much post-Lehman financial regulation is about this sort of labeling:
The way to prevent after-the-fact government bailouts is by making sure that risk is borne by people who bear it knowingly and can afford to.
Here that seems hard.
Evergrande got its financing from absolutely everyone — banks, investors, suppliers, customers, employees —
and it seems unlikely that they all knew what they were getting into.
Its capital structure branches out everywhere;
there are all sorts of sympathetic people who might lose money,
and it is not obvious who should be rescued and who shouldn’t be.
But the long-term work of making sure this doesn’t happen again is mostly
about transparency,
about allocating risks clearly in advance so you don’t have to sort them out in hindsight.
How to migrate to a new iOS device with login status persisted
John Gruber:
As someone who’s set up 5 new devices in the last week, my advice is to restore a new iPhone with the device-to-device transfer, not iCloud. Don’t worry if it says it might take a little longer.
Device-to-device is better IMO because it moves over all your login credentials.
The review units I set up using device-to-device worked great, every app (I think) still had me logged in. Even Slack. I set one up using iCloud restore: as usual, because iCloud backup doesn’t store some security stuff, I was logged out in a bunch of apps.
René Fouquet:
This will not work for Keychain items flagged with “kSecAttrAccessible[…]ThisDeviceOnly”, which is a best practice for very sensitive data. These items will never migrate to a new device, regardless of the method used for migration.
